TODAY’S MAP
NWS TECHNICAL DISCUSSION
A slight change is expected in our weather today. The ongoing heat and humidity will continue, but our rain chances will diminish. Aloft, strong ridging is suggested to set up west of Indiana, allowing for a drier flow aloft on northerly winds along with subsidence. Forecast soundings show subsidence and dry air arriving within the column through the day as 700mb temps rise to around 12C. These high values in combination with subsidence aloft, should provide more a of cap on convection, limiting thunderstorms development. HRRR show much less coverage than we have seen over the past few days. Small pops may still be needed today for any stray updraft that manages to break the cap, but confidence for that will be low. With a bit more subsidence in play today, Afternoon temperatures should be slightly higher, reaching the low to mid 90s. This combined with our very high dew points will result in heat index values around 105. The ongoing Heat Advisory will be needed and looks to be in good shape. Tonight... Overall little change is expected tonight. The ridging aloft and high pressure to the west is expected strengthen, keeping upper level subsidence in play. Again, forecast soundings overnight show dry air within the mid and upper levels along with a capping inversion within the lower levels where the moisture will be found. Thus a dry and warm night will be expected with lows in the low to middle 70s. && .LONG TERM (Tuesday through Sunday)... Issued at 323 AM EDT Mon Jul 28 2025 Hot and humid conditions will persist for the start of the long term, but welcome relief is on the horizon. Upper ridging over the central CONUS will act to keep the heat and deep moisture over the region, thus keeping the heat advisory through at least Tuesday. As for storms, Tuesday could see isolated to scattered storms but subsidence from the ridging should act to keep convection from being widespread. Best chances for storms this day will be across the north. Going into Wednesday however, storm chances will increase as an upper low over Canada and surface frontal boundary drop into central Indiana. Models still vary on timing of storms as well as how much rain we could see along the inital boundary during the day Wednesday. Confidence does increase as the surface low moves through late Wed to early Thursday. While widespread severe weather is not expected at this time, can`t rule out the potential for isolated damaging winds. Warm rain processes aiding in efficient rainfall rates could also lead to localized flooding. This threat should be confined to any areas that see training storms within a short period of time as mean flow suggest storms will be moving at a sufficient pace. The system will continue to push southeastward on Thursday with some lingering rain possible, but should all exit by Thursday night. Behind the midweek system, much cooler and below normal temperatures will settle in for several days as well as drier air. Pleasant conditions with no rain in the forecast should persist throughout the weekend.
