You’ll hear sirens today sometime between 10:15 and 10:30am, and again this evening between 7:30 and 7:45. The Annual Statewide Tornado Test Drill is part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.
Tornado Facts:
- Indiana had 11 tornadoes last year; the average is 20; the most: 49 in 1990.
- The average forward speed is 30 mph but varies from 0 to 70 mph.
- The average tornado width is about 100 yards but can reach one mile wide.
- Tornadoes can happen year round, but are most likely between 3 and 8pm, with a second peak from Midnight to 3am.
