Snow Tonight

December 31, 2007

It’s New Year’s Eve, and it’s gonna snow.  Run and hide!  It could be almost as slippery as Ryan Seacrest late tonight as the snow starts to accumulate.  That shouldn’t happen until after about 10 or 11 tonight.  About an inch is expected right in the Indianapolis area, but two inches is possible by the time you get to Lebanon, Carmel, Anderson and Muncie.  Go to Lafayette, Kokomo and Marion and it may be closer to three.

UPDATE @11am:  The Weather Service is issuing a Snow Advisory for tonight.  They think we’ll get about 2 inches more than I think we’ll get.  This is the fun part, right?  I don’t think we’ll see any accumulation until later tonight; they feel we could pick up an inch this afternoon.  Go to www.paulpoteet.com/severe.shtml for the latest advisory map, and then just underneath that map you’ll find a link to visit the “HPC’s” Winter Weather Forecast Area, which is a good place to dig into the snow.  If you will.  Feel free to “comment” back with any totals later tonight, or just some behind-the-scenes-at-your-party reports.  Stay off the roads if you can.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Cue (Just One Of) The Stories About Getting Fired

December 29, 2007

Tom Davis, my internet partner, likes to say that most blogs are a little much.  “The guy at the cleaners is usually nice, but today he seemed a little cold.”  Stuff like that.  So here’s my trivial contribution:  I am writing this in the car on the way to my Mom and Dad’s house in Huntington Indiana.  Mrs. Poteet is at the wheel, but really, I’ve done this trip hundreds of times, and I could probably blog while driving it.  KIDS:  Don’t try that at home.  The writer is just exaggerating.  He’s desperately in search of material since the cleaners are always nice to him.

Yesterday in the car I heard Q95’s voice guy dramatically introduce a cut from DEEP INSIDE THE VAULTS, or library, or something.  I braced myself:  a ten minute Floyd cut I’d forgotten about….some obscure Captain Beefheart (sp?) selection?  Maybe Elvis Costello would be Watching The Detectives?  So I held my breath and turned the knob up a notch.  And…  Here comes “Evil Woman.”  Now I love ELO just as much as the Average Joe.  Probably more.  But, that song is deep inside the vault/library/hard drive?  They need a bigger vault.  I thought I was shallow.

But, I kid.  I love all the other radio and TV stations.  Heck, I’ve worked for 87% of them, so I feel obligated.  I have nostalgic thoughts this time of year for Q, since they fired me on December 20, 1982.  But don’t cry for me, blog reader, I’ve been back there two times since then.  Might be back again someday…you never know.  I’ll be the one hosting the “ELO Lunch” feature.

There are a lot of new formats flying on the FM band these days.  Good luck.  It’s tough to get people to pay attention.  The most successful stations in Indy with adults 25-54 (I’ve got a bright future in Sales) tend to be the ones like WFMS and Q and WZPL who do more than just play the songs and have built a connection with the audience through personalities and promotions and community service.  Although WZPL could use a different weatherman.  The one they have now is kind of lame.

UPDATE:  I wrote all that in the car on the way up, but got too distracted with real life to post it.  So I’m uploading now on the way back home thanks to Panera in Noblesville.  I’m having the You Pick Two.  Greek Salad and Baby Portobello Bisque.  Am I sharing too much?  Panera’s a big Make-A-Wish supporter, so I’m happy to blog/plug.  And they’ve got Free Wi-Fi.  This post is costing me nothing but time.  Now, back to the Bisque.

My Facelift

December 27, 2007 General

Starting this blog has been a pain in the oops, you didn’t see that did you?  Take two:  Starting this blog has been a first step in expanding and organizing my brands across multiple Internet platforms.  You don’t have any idea of what that means, do you?  I know I don’t.  Anyway, I’ll have more online [...]

Family

December 26, 2007 General

Was it a Wonderful Life, or more like Christmas Vacation?  I hope you loved your time with the loved ones over the holiday.  We did, and we still will, this weekend with my Mom and Dad.  It’s easy to take people for granted, then one day they’re gone.  So live it up now.  Don’t be [...]
